As the novel coronavirus COVID-19 developed into a global pandemic I began to journal my Reflections on a Changing World. At that time it was clear to me that the world as we knew it would never be the same as the resultant death and disability and its incumbent economic fallout swept the globe.
Who could have imagined that just a few short months later a 2nd Pandemic, Racism, would explode on the scene and similarly challenge societies and governments around the world. Also leaving not only death and destruction in its wake, in the United States protests and demonstrations in response to egregious acts of police violence, followed by mindless looting and acts of hooliganism, wreaked their own economic havoc and exacerbated polarization in an already contentious election year.
Fast forward six months since This all began and the entire west coast of the United States has been impacted by historic wildfires. Resulting in their own death and destruction they have leveled some communities and left many others reeling in their wake also bringing death and economic hardship to untold thousands. Regionally drifting smoke has closed schools, shuttered still struggling-to-recover-from-pandemic-closure businesses and forced more people to stay in their homes than was ever accomplished by the most stringent COVID-19 stay-at-home edicts.
Like COVID-19 and Racism the smoke is unpredictable, widespread and its long lasting effects are currently unknown.
The Pollyanna in me believes that things come up to be healed.
“Current social upheaval may be seen as a collective gift of desperation.
Hitting bottom, our hardships energize our improvement and our healing.”
