Love in the Air

love in flight

This treat was on my seat, and those for several aisles around me, when I boarded a 6 hour cross country flight over the weekend. As it turns out Ezekiel did have a hard inaugural flight and was pretty vocal about it. Although the family was right behind me there was so much LOVE reverberating among the three that it drowned out the extraneous noise.

How very interesting… I just read about this new trend and, while I think it entirely considerate (and appreciate the trifecta of love you mention), I had a different thought.

Why is the onus on the family to assuage the discomfort of fellow passengers?

What if we all prepared for the possibility of a crying baby near us–maybe a toy or a song we could sing them or a book to share or some cool interactive visual on a tablet–so that the family can truly feel supported and we can do the whole “it takes a village at 35K to quiet a child” thing?

Imagine if a group of people took turns singing to a child on a plane or reading to them or making the parents laugh (which oft makes kids laugh). That would be magical!

*This is all of course, contingent on the parents wanting and accepting such interventions.
